Question
What are the letters below the date on coins for.

Answer
Hello Lucy,

Thanks for the Question.

On US Coinage since 1968 (excluding the Cent) the mint now places a MINT MARK signifying where the coin is made. In general all circulating coinage is produced at the mint facility in Denver ‘D’ and Philadelphia ‘P’.  Specific coins are also made at San Francisco ‘S’ and West Point Mints ‘W’, but are no always marked depending on the denomination and other factors.

The cent from Philadelphia does not have a mint mark to this day.
Good Luck,
