Question
I found a 1929 mercury head dime. Is it worth much on todays market?

Answer
Hello Warren,

Numismatic (coin) Value is determined by two factors.

1) How rare it is.
2) Its grade.
This coin will only sell from $1.50 to $4.00 in grades below Mint State.

But if you can, send more information on the coin with your questions. Information like the condition “Grade or State of Preservation” on a coin is necessary to set a value.
Are the High-Points and lettering sharp or worn?

Here's a quick wear/Grading guideline from the book for 1916 to 1945 dimes:

GOOD or Grade 4 :
Letters and date clear no lines or bands on reverse faces.

VERY GOOD or Grade 8:
Half there sticks in the faces can be seen.

FINE or Grade 12:
All sticks in faces are defined. Diagonal bands nearly flat.

VERY FINE or :
Both crossing diagonal bands must show.

EXTREMELY FINE or Grade 40:
Bands show only slight wear. Braids and hair before ear show clearly.

MINT STATE Grades 60 TO 70 :
STRICTLY NEVER CIRCULATED.  NO TRACE OF WEAR. Nice luster on coin. It will be as nice as a new coin in your pocket.

This information is necessary to arrive at a range of value for any coin.

Thank You and Good Luck
