Question

1881 morgan
Hello, can you tell me if this looks real to you? S mint mark,  weight is about 26.7 grams, looks really shiny but you know how the silver gets this kind of dull black stuff on it this one is a little different to me. thanks

Answer
Hi Aram,
This is certainly a genuine coin. Anytime you have something that is the correct size and weight you can be confident it's real, since any metal a counterfeiter may use would be either lighter or heavier than silver.
The reason it's so shiny, and this is unfortunate, is due to a harsh cleaning. Most likely it's been polished by pressurized hot steam, which jewelers use to clean jewelry.
For a common date, it does not affect the value much, being that they typically are jsut a little above silver value anyway. For a scarce date, it may cut the value in half.
I apologize that you had to wait so long for a response, the expert you originally posed this question to passed it along just today.
Thanks for the question and best of luck with your coin! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
