Expert: Troy Thoreson - 8/13/2009

Question
Next month i will be in Cozumel & Progreso, MX.  Mexico has very little i want to bring home. However, i was thinking of a gold bullion coin (or two).  i realized they are worth 'spot', but can Mexican gold coins be worth more ?  Beside fraud, are there any AU or AG interesting coins (other) to look for ?

You should realize that many Experts on this site have full time business with little time to answer questions that may take a novice years to learn, especially when not given a direct question.  It is petty of you to give a 2 rating when I answered your question direct without any fluff, "Unless you go in it with expert eyes I highly recommend not looking for any bargains."  How in the world can you expect to become an knowledgeable enough within 30 days to buy coins from unknown sources in Mexico????  The 'canned' response is added to help the complete novice from making common mistakes regarding the handling of coins.

Not to mention my phone number is given and/or you can reply for follow-up for any specific question anyone might have.

Hi Dave,

Unless you go in it with expert eyes I highly recommend not looking for any bargains.  If you want to buy gold better to contact a dealer you can trust and arrange a transaction.  

Please remember to never clean coins, this can damage and lessen their value.  Also, soft plastics can contain harmful chemicals that can react with coins over time.  Try using inert materials when storing coins.  Plus, it is always a good idea to store coins in a safe.  The safe should not be exposed to the elements and should not be up against a wall to the outside.  These are just a few tips I have learned over the years to help keep your collection in top shape.
