Coin and Paper Money Collecting/2001 penny

Question
I have a 2001 penny that I thought was 1943 penny when i saw it in a penny tray at a small town gas station/store.  i asked the counter person if I could trade them a penny for it and they said sure.  After i left the store I took a second look and it was a memorial penny and the stamping is very sharp.  Could some have gotten out without the copper surface?  THANKS

Answer
Ronald,

You have what is known as an unfinished planchet error, where the coin blank was cut from an area of the long metal (zinc) sheet that did not get its outer copper coating.  With the billions of pennies minted every year, this actually happens more often than you might think.

As described, its value is a dollar or two.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
