Question
Hello, I have a silver coin that has 1G 1897 MUNT VAN HET KONINGRYK DER NEDERLANDEN with what looks like a crown sitting on top of a shield with a lion that has a crown on its head and holding a sword.  On the other side Wilhelmina Koningen der Nederlanden.  Thank you

Answer
Hi Christine,
Your Netherlands 1 gulden is made of .945 purity silver and should weigh right around 10.0 grams. Although 1897 is one of the more common dates, these coins are always popular with collectors. A well worn example starts at around $10 and a lightly worn coin usually sells in the $30-$50 range at auction. If you have an example in mint condition the value quickly jumps to well over $100 and as high as $250.
If you post another question and add a picture of this coin I can give you a more specific value for it.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
