Question
I have been an off and on coin collector all my life and now my children are coin collecting.  I have coinage hundreds of one cent coins from the Bahamas, and Jamaica.  What year did the Bahamas stop using copper for their one cent, same question for Jamacia one cent coin?

Answer
Hi Kevin,
The Bahamas 1 cent coins were never minted in copper. From 1966 (first year) to 1985 they were minted in brass and brass alloys (1970 was the only year minted in bronze). From 1985 onward they were done in copper plated zinc much like the US pennies.
Similar story for the Jamaican pennies: From 1969 to 1974 they were made in bronze and after that in aluminum.
All of these are still spendable legal tender in those countries, and that is where the only value lies for these coins.
It's great that your kids are getting into the hobby as well.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.

Experience
