Question
Hello, I have a gold Dutch coin, approximately 3.8cm, Wilhelmina Koningin, w/ her profile on front and Oranje Boven 6 September 1898 1923 on the back.  I can not seem to find any information online.  Thank you for any help.  Renee

Answer

Dutch jubilee medal
Hi Renee,
What you have is actually a commemorative medal, for the 25th anniversary of Wilhelmina's rule.
There are older versions and new re-strikes. I have attached a picture of one such re-strike, notice the features look frosted and the background like a mirror? That is a proof strike. The original medals have a much more dull surface.
They are not made of actual gold, rather gold colored material. The old versions were either brass or gilded base metal, the newer versions are gold tone over base metals such as bronze or white metal.
An older version in good condition sells for 100+ euros, or around $150+ US. Newer versions are fairly inexpensive, being novelty items.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
