Question I came across quite a few franklin half dollars from the 1950’s and was wondering how many more I need to make a set?
Answer Hello Bruce,
The Franklin Half Dollar series is a short one and easy to collect in circulated grades. The series consists of only 35 coins.
This issue coin was only made for 16 years between 1948 and 1963. All of the details are covered in the RED BOOK titled - A GUIDE BOOK of UNITED STATES COINS - by R. S. Yeoman. The Mints that made them each year and how to estimate a grade is describes at the start of each coin series. These facts are taken from the history books and it is issued with the blessing of the American Numismatic Association. The coins are graded from 1 to 70 on a scale that is recognized by all professionals since the 1970's. If you can borrow a copy it will tell you most of what you want. The book sells for around $10 new but an old copy is fine for the information you asked here.
