Question
Helly Dmitry, I have a coing with the markings "LUDOV.XV D.GRATIA" on one side, along with a profile of a head facing right, and the markings "FRANCE ET NAVARRE REX.1767" on the other, along with a crown and 3 lilly's. What can you tell me about this coin? Are they common/rare, cheap/valuable? Any info you have would be helpful and intersting. Thank you! Eric.

Answer
Hi Eric,
This French copper is either a 1/2 sol or 1 sol denomination, depicting Louis XV. If your coin is larger than a US half dollar, then it's the larger and slightly more valuable denomination. These are fairly common in worn or corroded condition, as they are still being dug up to this day. A worn, but readable, example typically runs around $5, maybe up to $10 if there is no damage or corrosion. If you've got one with sharp details, the price jumps into the $15-$30 range. Especially high grade coins with an original surface run into the $100+ range.
If you post a follow-up question and attach a photo I can give you more specific info on the value.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
