Question
Hello:
I found this money in a filer looking for some papers, but could not found in the net almost any information about it. At the back:

1857 (dot) REP (dot) PERUANA (dot) PASCO (dot) PASCO (dot) 4R (dot) 10D (small "s" at the top) (dot) 20G (small "s" at the top) (dot) [finaly, a "z" inside a circle]

Thanks.

Thanks.

Answer
Hi JJ,
This 4 reales is an early coin from Peru. A genuine coin is made from .903 silver and should weigh right around 13.5 grams, though a worn coin will be slightly less (about a gram or so).
These are quite popular on the current market and even a well worn coin starts in the $20-$30 range. This jumps to an easy $50-$100 for a better grade example. A nice, high grade coin goes into the $200+ range.
If you have a picture, just post a follow-up question and I can give you a more exact value on this coin.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
