Answer

BavThaler
Hi Meide,
What a beautiful item!
This is actually not originally a medal, rather it is an early silver thaler from the German State of Bavaria (their equivalent of a silver dollar or crown). The surface appears to have toned naturally as silver does or had been patinated, which explains the bronze look.
This coin has been very finely enameled, which is a huge value boost to a coin that otherwise would fall somewhere between $50 and $250 depending on the exact condition.
Such a well executed piece of art can easily do $500 or more and it's not even necessary to present it to a German bidding population. If both sides have enameling that would make it significantly more valuable.
Another point of interest is that this appears to be an old piece, which is always a plus. There are many old coins that have been just recently enameled using modern techniques.
Great find, thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
