Question
hello, i posess a 1947 indian one rupee coin, george vi king emperor on one side and a tiger on the other side of it.What would be the expected value that i can get for it if i want to sell it?
i have another 1 rupee indian coin, to one side is victoria empress and to the other side is "one rupee india 1874" and motifs of leaves around the same side with an emblem of some kind at the bottom. would want to know the expected market value of the same. thanking you.

Answer
Hi Jeetu,
The 1947 coin is made of nickel, and is the only year the rupee was made in a metal other than silver. In mint condition I have sold these for around $20-$25, which is a little more than the book value. For a circulated coin, the value would be just a couple of dollars or less.
The 1874 rupee is .917 silver and worth a little more. A decent coin with light wear usually sells for $15 or so, a really nice one goes into the $20's and a mint condition coin sells in the $30-$40 range and sometimes higher.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
