Question

5cent
I have an australian 5cent coin struck on the wrong metal. I cannot find anything about this.

Answer
Hi Allen,
Error coins like this, which are struck from wrong planchets (in this case likely a penny), are among the most rare. Very few ever manage to make it outside the mint, where quality assurance employees will routinely melt them down and create a "normal" coins.
It's also fairly common to see coins that have been plated to look as such. To be sure, you will need to get an exact measurement of the diameter and exact weight.
for a genuine piece, if certified by a reputable grading company, can sell for several hundred dollars. The exact amount is very difficult to predict, because there are no price guides for these, the markets vary greatly.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
