Question

coin 2/coin 2 001
I have a medallion that I can't find any info on. I am sending you pics. This is a Patrona Bavariae with a relief of Munich on the back and no date.It is the size of a quarter. Can you help with this. My jeweller said it is at least 23K, perhaps 23.999. Can't really tell exact without a gold test and that would deface it. Thanks for your time.

Answer

Bavaria gold medal
Hi Richard,
This is a novelty gold bullion piece, and is not an official coin or "state medal". I have included a picture of another piece which is similar to yours, but smaller at 3.1 grams. A gold coin that is the size of a quarter should be in the neighborhood oh 7-8 grams, since gold is much more dense. The value on these piece is in the gold bullion value, which is right around $1,000 per ounce. Yout coin likely has aroyund 1/4 ounce, so $250 would be a very fair market value. Being a modern piece there is no real numismatic value. I am also very confident that this piece is .999 fine gold.
The "Patrona Bavariae" design harks back to the early Bavarian silver and gold thalers and marks of the 1700's and 1800's.
Thanks for the question! =)
