Question
i have a 1889 silver dollar, in trying to find value idont know what they mean when they have letters such as 1889cc, what do the lettrs mean

Answer
Hi Marvin,
These letters are mint marks. There were four mints - Philadelphia has no mint mark. San Fransisco has an S, New Orleans has an O and Carson city is the always desirable Carson City mint.
These letters are located on the back, at the bottom below the eagle and wreath of leaves. The mint marked coins are always worth at least a little more than the non-mint marked coins. CC mint coins are key dates.
Sorry about the delay for getting your answer, but this question had been passed up by the expert you initially asked it to.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.

Experience

Collector of world coins since early childhood. Access to a variety of auction records and reference material. You can also find me on Facebook.
