Answer
Hi Ron,
This is a Spanish colonial "pillar dollar" from the Mexico City mint. These were used as currency all over the world in that period, including in the US until 1859. The little chop marks on your coin are merchant's symbols from the Oriental trade, meaning your coin had been circulated throughout the Asian markets.
Based on the side in the picture it appears to be a mid-grade coin, right around VF (very fine) condition. As such, you can expect $60 to $80 for it at auction. A retail store or website may charge up to $125 for it though.
The Mexico City coins like this are the most common. Similar looking coins minted in Bolivia, Peru, Chile, Guatemala or Colombia command much higher prices due to being scarce.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
