Question
Dear Brad,
I have a coin dated 1808 (5 Francs) one side has Napoleon Empereur not sure of the mark under Napoleons neck, other side has Republique Frangaise. A. Good shape for over 200 years old. I also have other smaller coins dated 1900 to 1920. My Grandmother was a World War One Nurse and she has several items from that time.. Wondering if it has any real value....Thanks Jane

Answer
Hi Jane, There were 6.5 million of these French 5 Franc coins minted that year in Paris (A) featuring Emperor Napoleon (1804-15). This coin should weigh 25.0 grams and would contain .7234 of an ounce of silver. Collector value may be worth about $15 with heavy wear to around $50 with moderate wear to maybe $120 with light wear.
Collector value of a coin depends on denomination (face value), date, mint mark (if any), number minted and condition of a coin, including amount of wear, any dents, scratches or cleaning as well as collector demand for it.
You might also try a library for a copy of the Standard Catalog of World Coins for pictures, values and lots more interesting info.
