Question

1853
I have a 1853 1 cent coin that appears to be double struck..Where it is double struck the edge is smaller then the rest of the coin.As you can see by the pics the E in cent is missing part if the E.The front is also faded where the double strike is on the back.Any ideal if its double struck and what its worth?.Thanks

Answer
Don,

Sorry but it looks like this coin was altered after it left the mint.  It cannot be double struck because the second strike is backwards.  This could not have been done by the coin dies, but rather by being smashed together with another large cent.  I believe this happened after the coin left the mint because the coin would be much more mis-shapen if it was smashed by the pressure of a coin press.

This of course is my opinion.  To be sure, you should probably seek the opinion of an error dealer I know -- mike@mikebyers.com

As an altered coin, it has minimal collector value.

I hope this helps,

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
