Question
I found this coin on my property while excavating, a penny dated 1863. The writing is worn rather smooth in some spots; what I can read on the face is "VICTORY D.G." "BRITT:REG:F:D" on back "PENNY"  "1863". It is green in color. thank you for your help!

Answer
Hi Sharon,
This is an English penny depicting the young Queen Victoria, as you may have guessed.
In the condition you describe, the regular 1863 date would not be worth more than a dollar (due to being corroded from prolonged exposure to the elements).
However, there is also a rare variety that will be valuable even in this condition.
If you look below the date, there may be a tiny number 2, 3 or 5 near the edge. If your coin has one of these it will be worth at least $50 even in rough shape, depending on which number is there.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
