Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1864 Peruvian Sol

Question
I was recently given a 1864 Peruvian Sol in good condition.  It's made of almost pure silver.  Can you tell me the approximate value in US dollars?  Thank you.

Answer
Hi David,
These are very nice looking coins, but are fairly common. As such, the values for even a high grade coin are not that different from a common date Morgan silver dollar. A well used coin can be purchased for $15 or less, while one with minimal wear can be seen at auction in the $20-$30 range. Mint condition coins top out in the $50 to $60 range.
The values for used coins depend on the silver market, while mint condition examples hold their value regardless of what silver does.
Thanks for the question and a happy new year! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
