Question
I have an 1866 Napoleon III Empereur   one franc coin with Napoeon on the front, a coat of arms on the back,   there is a small A just underneath his head, probably denoting, where it was minted   can you giveme an approximate value of this coin, if any  it is only mildly worn

Answer
Hi Lonie,
As you guessed, the letter underneath the head denotes the mint where French coins like this were made. In this case the letter A is for the Paris mint.
These are popular coins with collectors and an example with minor wear sells for $20 to $30 on the US market and $30 to $50+ internationally.
This is one of the common dates/mints, so the value is not as high as someone may expect for a coin that old and in good condition.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
