Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1900's coin valuation
Expert: Brad Swain - 1/4/2010
QuestionI have a few "one penny" coins with inscription "EdwardsVSVII DEI GRA:BRITT:OMN:REX FID:DEF:IND:IMP:" dated 1861,1876,1902,1906,1907,1908,1909,1912,1914,1917,1920,1921,1909 + "hale penny" 1920,1922,1933,1967
+ "one penny" 1920 with a hole in the middle of the "Jewish type star" inscribed British West Africa
+ 1936 Canadian 5 cent coin
+ 1900,1909, 1913 Canadian "one cent"
+ a 1925 coin inscribed "Krona Island" with a "1"
+ a 1941 coin inscribed "Leopold roi des belges with a "5"
+ 1940 New Zealand "one penny".
Most of the coins are in fairly good condition but I have not cleaned them in case I would alter the value.
Are these coins worth much and if so, how do I go about selling them: I have absolutely no clue as to the possible value and not knowing how to protect myself from having them stolen or swindled by the wrong kind of evaluator, I am afraid to leave the coins for a hands-on evaluation.
Much obliged for your response.
AnswerHi Jeannette, Collector value of a coin depends on denomination (face value), date, mint mark (if any), number minted and condition of a coin, including amount of wear, any dents, scratches or cleaning as well as collector demand for it.
+ Great Britain 1 penny 1861,1876,1902,1906,1907,1908,1909,1912,1914,1917,1920,1921
with moderate wear: $18, $19, $3.50, $5, $5, $5, $5, $2.50, $2.50, $2.50, $2.50, $2.50
+ Great Britain "half penny" 1920,1922,1933,1967
with moderate wear: $1.50, $2, .50, .10
