Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1968 D Roosevelt dime error???

Question
My 12 yer old daughter brought a dime to my attention that she got in change. The coin is a 1968 D Roosevelt dime, and the front and back faces exibit typical wear for the age of the coin. The odd thing about this coin is the serrated edge. The edge (the copper portion) appears to be set back (sort of like the icing in an Oreo cookie) maybe .025", and it is set back uniformly all the way around the circumference of the coin. You can see that this center 'layer' is there if you look with a magnifier, and it is serrated. The front and back silver-colored faces do not appear serrated at the outer edges, though. I have never seen anything like this before, how common is this? Is there any additional value due to this possible error?

Answer
Ron,
There are a few things that could cause this but none of them equate to any sizable $ amount.

Most likely it is a mint error, either from the collar not being secured during minting of a bad planchet.  However, without being able to physically inspect the coin, I can not determine any certain value or what caused the error.
