Question
Sir, I have a 1968 Canadian dollar coin with a canoe.  I was wondering about the water lines.  The 1969 coin has 5 while mine visibly has 6 sets...is this considered a error or double die coin?

Answer
Hi Ted,
Sounds like you have one of Canadian numismatics' most popular mint errors. There is indeed a double die variety with 6 sets of water lines listed for this date. Although no prices are listed in most catalogs, an auction estimate on a typical lightly circulated coin is $30 to $50. However, certified/graded mint condition coins retail between $200 and $300. Very nice find and good eye!
Thanks for the question. =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
