Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1975 aluminum(?) penny

Question
I acquired a penny a few years ago from circulation, put it away and recently stumbled across it again. It appears perfectly normal in every way except that it is a very bright silver. I don't quite know what to make of it. It isn't plated because there is a noticeable scratch near the back of Lincoln's head which doesn't expose any different underlying materials. I've heard that there were some test with aluminum pennies from 1974, but the date on mine is clearly 1975. I would greatly appreciate any insight into the origin and value of this piece. Thank you!

Answer
Hi Dustin,
There were experimental aluminum cents in 1974 but they were never released into circulation.  I believe the would be confiscated by the Secret Service if they appeared on the market.
However, that doesn't mean that you don't have one dated 1975.
In 1943 the cents were zinc plated steel becuase copper was being used in the war effort.  However, a few blanks were still in the machine from 1942, hence a major rarity was born.
I would have to inspect it to see what you have.
