Question
I have a 10 PFENNIG from 1917 in what I believe is steel because I have a few from 1950 to 1970 and they appear to a goldtone. Could it be steel and is it more valuable.

Answer
Hi Ray,
The 10 pfennig coins of World War I era Germany were made of iron and zinc, your is likely the iron one. These coins will have a circle of large dots running all around the edge on the side with the eagle. If there is no circle of dots then it's the zinc variety.
They were minted in the many millions of coins for each year and for each mint (there are 5 different mint marks for this year, all with about the same value). These marks are found just below the eagle's talons, at either side of the tail. They are not always readable however.
Value starts at around 50 cents for a well used coin and tops out at around $5 for one in mint condition. The same would be true for the zinc versions.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
