Question
Hello, my dad gave me this silver coin from 1930 but i don't really know what it is. On the front it says eaahnikh ahmokpati with a bird in flames and a cross and what looks like the star of David above it. And on the back it says 5 apaxmai with what looks like Julius Caesar head dress around it. If you could help me out to see if its maybe worth something then sweet!

Sincerely, Katie

Answer

Hi Katie,
You have a 5 drachmai from Greece. It's made of nickel, and they do have pretty good value if they are in excellent condition.
Coins with signs of use are only worth a couple of dollars, but one that is shiny with luster and does not look to have any wear can sell for $50 to $75.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
