Question
my friend has 2 gold coins he would like valuing, one is a 1975 Bermuda one hundred dollar and the other is a 1973 commonwealth of the Bahamas independence one hundred dollar with a crest on the back with a swordfish up the left and a flamingo up the right, if you could help with either of these we would be very grateful.

Yours faithfully

Claire

Answer
Hi Claire,
The value for both of these coins is mostly in the gold bullion value, plus an additional 10% or so for collector value.
The Bermuda coins contains just over 1/5th of an ounce of pure gold (7.03 grams at .900 purity). This coin would sell today for $250 US (£155 GPB).
For the Bahamas coin, there are two varieties for that date. One variety will have the numbers .585 and the date 1973 in small numerals at either side of the crest. This one contains just over 1/4th of an ounce of pure gold and would bring $325 US (£200 GPB) on the current market.
The better variety for this year will not have any markings at either side if the crest and contain .35 ounces of pure gold. That variety sells for about $425-$450 US (£265-£280 GPB).
If you have any additional questions feel free to ask.
Thanks! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
