Question
Hi,
I have a coin that looks arabic.  On one side is writing, while the other side has a picture of scales and the number 1199 (I think).  Can you tell me where its from and how old it is?
Thank you.

Answer

Hi Erin,
You have a 1 pysa coin from Zanzibar. The date on the coin is actually 1299, which is a Hijri or Islamic date. When converted to our Gregorian calendar 1299 = 1882 AD. The value for this coin depends greatly on condition. They are common in used shape but scarce in mint condition.
A decent circulated example starts at $5-$10 while a mint condition coin runs $100+.
Thanks for the question! =)

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
