Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Old British coin

Question

Old Coin
Hello,

I own an old 1789 British coin that shows King George III, I'd like to know a little about it and what it might be worth.

Answer
Hi Kerry,
This is indeed a British coin, a half-penny that would actually be dated 1799 (the only year this type was made). It looks to have spent some time in the ground, but overall the details are still sharp.
A fair auction estimate would be $20 to $30. If the surface did not have signs of corrosion or environmental damage, the value would be $30 to $50.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
