QUESTION: Hello Demitri,
I was wondering the value of this coin.(see attached)
It was left to my mother by her father and she would like to sell it.
I have seen many coins on line, but not with this date.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely. Mace

ANSWER: Hi Mace,
This is actually a fairly common date, with over 4 million coins made that year. In the condition shown it would be worth approximately 15% above gold bullion value. At the current market prices for gold, that would be $275 to $300.
Thanks for the question! =)

QUESTION: Is there a reputable buyer of coins in the brooklyn n.y. area?  My mom would like to sell it.

Thanks again for your time.

Answer
Hi Mace,
That's interesting because I am in Brooklyn, NY myself, though I do not buy these types of coins.
Your best bet is to get in touch with one of the eBay drop stores. There is one I know of on Ralph avenue, and another in Manhattan. They will auction it on eBay for top dollar and take a percentage fee.
A local dealer will give you less for it than you would get by having an eBay drop store auction it. The drop store may take 20%, but a dealer will usually offer only 50% of the value. Even in the best case scenario a dealer will offer a little below gold bullion value, which still ends up being 25% or more below the value.
The one dealer I can think of that will give you a decent price is a guy who has a shop over by Kings Highway and McDonald avenue, "Liberty coins" and his name is Steve. You can find him in the phone book or by Googling "Liberty coins" and "Brooklyn". He will pay very close to the gold bullion value of the coin and you will end up getting the same as if you auctioned it with an eBay store, but a lot quicker.
Thanks again for the questions! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
