Question
Hello, I have a silver colored coin that I found but I don't know what it is. It is very light and one side it has a 25 and C MES below it with a holy vine on the right side. the back has some sort of crest with Letzeburg written on the bottom. Because it is so light it makes me think that it may be fake but I was wondering if you may know what it is.
Thank you for your time

Answer

Hi Katelyn,
This sounds like a 25 centimes from Luxembourg. The coins like this from 1954 to 1972 were made of aluminum, which is very light. Some of the dates exist with two different alignments of the sides. If you hold the coin upright, with your fingers at the top and bottom, and flip the coin left to right - the reverse should be upside down. This is the normal variety and is worth under a dollar even in mint condition.
If you flip the coin and the reverse is also upright, you have a scarce variety worth $10 to $30 depending on condition.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
