Question

Dime
Hi Brad,
I received this 1916 Mercury Dime with my change.  Can you please tell me what it is worth?

Thanks,
Carol

Answer
Hi Carol, nice find! This 'Mercury' dime contains .07234 of an ounce of silver (currently worth about $1.25). It may have a mintmark letter, D or S, to the left of the base of the torch on the back.
With no mintmark (Philadelphia), collector value may be worth about $3 with heavy wear to around $8 with moderate wear to maybe $12 with light wear. With an S mintmark (San Francisco) $4, $12, $20 in same conditions as listed above. And with a D, $1000, $4000, $6000.
You might try Ebay.com for similar pieces for comparison.
You might take it by a local coin shop for a first hand opinion: http://find.mapmuse.com/interest/coin_dealers .
You might also try a library for a copy of the Guidebook of United States Coins for pictures, values and lots more interesting info.
