Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Von Bayern Medal

Question
I have a Luitpold Prinz-Regent Von Bayern medal.  At least I think it is a medal.  The back states:  DEM BESTEN SCHUTZEN  The front has a likeness of Leopold Von Bayern, I think.

It was brought to this country by my father in-law when he immigrated here from Bavaria.  Any information you have would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Debi,
The fact that your father-in-law came from Bavaria makes perfect sense, since what you have is indeed a Bavarian medal.
The phrase "Dem Besten Schutzen" translates as "The Best Protecting". You have a military medal, made of sterling silver and dating between 1886 and 1912. This period is the reign of Otto, also known as Prince Regent Luitpold. Your medallion is most likely from the late 1880's to early 1890's.
The value really depends on condition and the market it is being sold in (weather or not you plan on actually selling it).
One that is on excellent condition would sell, at a good auction, for $75 to $100 on the US market and around 100 euros ($145) on the European market.
For comparison, the following link is of a German site selling a perfect example of your medal with the original presentation box: https://www.weitze.net/detail/10/Dem_Besten_Schuetzen_1_Preis_Besond_Schiessklasse_fuer_Unteroffiziere__85010.html

Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
