Coin and Paper Money Collecting/non mint marked coins

Question
a buddy of mine has a non mint marked 2000 New Hampshire quarter and was wondering how much it would be worth he tells me that it has been in circulation and appears to be in decent shape any help on this would be much appreciated

Answer
Dan,

Missing mintmarks like this (or other missing letters/numbers) are generally caused by leftover machine grease that got into the dies and filled in the crevices where the letters would be, preventing the metal from the coin blank from getting into those crevices, resulting in blank areas where letters are supposed to be.

This is actually a relatively common striking error. And with little collector interest, its value is minimal -- perhaps a dollar.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
