Question
hello i have recently found a fairly odd coin with no value on it. on the one side if has the letters ER with two small I in between, crown above and canada beneath. around the outside it says regina coronata, MCMLIII and elizabeth II. on the back it just has the queen face looking to the right. could you please tell me what this coin is and how much it may be worth? thank you

Answer
Hi Shane,
This is one of several types of medallions made by the Royal Canadian Mint in honor of the 1953 coronation of Elizabeth II (similar pieces also made for Georges V and VI). These are most often found in bronze, though some brass and even silver types were made as well.
For a bronze medallion, value would be up to $10 if the piece is in excellent condition without any damage. A decent example with some wear or dings is worth in the area of $5.
Silver examples typically sell for 50% to 100% above the silver value, based on it's weight.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
