Question

1875 CNP 50 Centavos
This coin has been in my family for at least 50 years and maybe much longer. We came from Michigan, I have no idea where this coin came from. Any idea on worth? What can you tell me about the CNP mint mark,

Answer
Hi Russell,
This 50 centavos is from the Culiacan mint (Cn), the P is the mint official's initial who was in charge at that time.
These coins are popular with collectors, but this coin has unfortunately been cleaned in addition to wear from circulation. It's got right around $12 worth of silver in it and the collectible value in this condition would not be much higher, $15 or so.
These coins have a slightly higher .903 purity silver standard than .900 US coins of that period.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
