Coin and Paper Money Collecting/2003A Dollar Misprint

Question
I've come across a US one-dollar bill in fair condition with a slight misprint.  The lower left corner of the back of the bill has a triangular .5x.5x.6" black ink over-print image of the lower left corner of face of the bill.  The face of the bill is normal.  2003A D57421151C  4.  Does it have value, or should I buy a lottery ticket with it?

Thx,
Steve

Answer
Hi Steve:

Thanks for your question.

Without a photo or more of a description, I can't give you an exact reason for your unusual note. It may be an error or an altered note. From your limited description, it sounds like you may have an offset error. Bills are printed in sheets of 36 notes and in three phases. Reverse print, obverse print, and serial numbers with seal print. This likely happened during the second print operation when the separation sheet was mis-fed, and part of the prior printing was offset onto your note.  If you want to give me more of a description, or send photos of your note in a follow-up question, I'll revised my answer, if required. Condition is very important in establishing thew value of your note. Circulated notes would trade for $10 to $20, while uncirculated notes notes may sell for as much as $100.

You may want to check US coins and currency listings under errors on eBay from time to time to see if your bill is listed what this type of item may bring.

If you live close to a local shop, they should offer an opinion as to the value at no charge. Always try and get at least two opinions and try and deal with PNG dealers if possible. If you should decide to sell your items to a dealer, remember they will offer about 50% to 60% of the retail value. Here's a link to find one in your area: http://www.pngdealers.com/dealersearch.php
