Question

Coin front
Can you identify this coin. I cannot make out the words but I believe they are Latin. I can see "hoc sic" and possibly "stimpel". The back side has a crest or similar and the front has "40" counterstruck in the center.

Answer
Hi Corey,
This is a Brazilian coin. It's one of the counter-marked coins that were stamped in 1835 on previously existing Brazilian coins from the earlier part of the 1800's. Your coin, the 40 reis, is stamped on an older 80 reis. The value is determined by the specific date and mint mark of the coin that it's struck on. When this is no longer visible, the coin is only worth a dollar or two.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
