Question

found coin
Found this coin in an old desk. can you help identify it? or point me in the right direction to get it identified? although it looks silver, it is not. it is a gold color but does not seem to be gold. also, it has an "HP" stamped in the side of it. the info that i found said it was from the king chareles the 4th era, but it is in very good condition for being made in the 1300's if that is true. please let me know. thank you.

Answer

Hi Anthony,
This is a modern copy of a Bohemian "grossus" coin from medieval Prague. The dating would be right for the original pieces, but this replica would have been made within the last 50 years.
Unfortunately there would not be a collectible value on such a novelty item.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
