Question

1812
I can't really figure out how to tell if coin has big or small 8.
Can you tell from picture?
Thank you

Answer

Hi Frank,
This appears to be the small date. The quickest way to tell the small and large 8's appart is to look at the loops. The samll 8, like your picture, has a top and bottom loop which are virtually identical. The large 8 (see attached picture) has a top loop that is more square-shaped and a bottom loop that is round and slightly smaller, like a donut hole.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
