Question

Coin front
I am hoping to get some information on this coin and possibly sell it.  As I said above, it's a 1827 Charles X Roi 5 franc.  My question is concerning the large hole and punch through the coin.  I don't know if it is an error or something done to the coin after it was in circulation.  I've linked to images below showing the coin in full detail.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Note: Images are very large to show detail.

Answer

Hi Erica,
I just recently saw this coin listed on eBay, and was tempted to send the seller a message.
This is not a mint error. The min ting process would make something like this punched hole virtually impossible. Someone likely clamped a loop or other attachment on this coin, while it was still new. This was not an uncommon practice and I have seen similar french coins made into pocket knives, paper clips, watch fobs, etc.
This may have very well been a watch fob at one time, but the attachment came off or was removed.
Here is another 5 francs that was crafted into an item: http://cgi.ebay.com/FRANCE-5-FRANCS-FOLDING-1837-POCKET-KNIFE-SILVER-COIN_W0QQit...
If the rivets were removed, the holes left behind would be in a similar fashion to the one on your coin.
I am afraid in this condition it's not worth a whole lot beyond silver bullion value.
Thanks for the question and best of luck with the coin! =)

CommentThanks for getting back to me so quickly! I did have the coin listed on ebay. When I realized that the coin wasn't likely to be what I was told it was I closed the auction. Not sure of the value of silver at the moment, but I am a cold connection jeweler and this may have a home as a lovely focal for a brooch or necklace. Thanks again!

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
