Question
I have an 1844 Bank of Montreal Half penney token, and am interested in knowing if it has any value. It is in fairly good condition, and you can clearly see the detail on both faces of the coin. Thanks!

Answer
Hi Amanda,
these Lower Canada tokens show up pretty often at auction. The 1844 half-penny is a fairly common one and a coin in good shape fetches $8 to $15. The lower end applies to US only auctions and the high end to international ones. If you put it up on eBay you should get a cool $10, as long as there are no problems with the surface or damage to the coin.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
