Question
I have two Bavarian Coins one dated 1778 and the other 1796. one side says PATRONA BAVARIAE, with the number 20 at the bottom. Can you tell me their value?
Thanks, Gail

Answer
Hi Gail,
These are silver 20 kreuzer coins, depicting ruler Karl Theodor. The value for either date starts at around $10 for a decent, used coin and goes up to $100 for one in excellent condition. On the 1778 coin, there may or may not be a letter A below the portrait of the ruler. If there is an A the coin is worth more, from $15 to about $175 in the same condition range.
I can certainly give you a more exact grade and value if you post a follow-up question with a picture of the coins.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.

Collector of world coins since early childhood. Access to a variety of auction records and reference material. You can also find me on Facebook.
