Question
I'm wondering about the value of the referenced coin. The obverse has the bust of a woman and says  "JULIANA KONING DER NEDERLANDED".  The reverse has what looks like maybe the family arms (?) showing a crown and a shield (upright lion with a sword?)and also the info as shown on my subject line.  I have no reference on how to grade the condition, but it looks to be in very good shape with little wear.  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Karen,
As you may have guessed it's a Dutch coin, a 1 1/2 gulden (the largest coin denomination during that time). It is made of .720 purity silver and should weigh right around 15 grams. Since these are relatively new and fairly common, value ranges from silver bullion value for an average used coin to around $15 for one in mint condition. One with minimal wear would sell for $8 to $10 at auction, which is still a bit better than the $5 or so worth of silver that the coin is made out of.
You can always post a follow-up question with a picture if you would like a more specific estimate.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
