Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1975 dime

Question
I was reading that 1975 dimes from Phili are marked P or none. And that 1975 proof dimes without "s" are worth something. How can you tell the difference if there is no mint mark? Thanks

Answer
Dan,

P mintmarks on dimes did not start until 1980 -- prior to that all dimes frim the main mint in Philadelphia did not have any mintmark.

Proofs will have very sharp edges to all the features -- best compared under strong magnification -- and will have a mirrored finish to the surfaces -- compare the surfaces to any other proof coin of that time period.

If you do have a proof with no mintmark, it is worth about $35,000

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
