Question
I have 5 plastic encased 1996 Republic of Liberia Silver $50 Dollar Coins and 1 1974 "Republic De Panama" 20 Balboas with LEY 0.925 stamped on the back, it's encased in plastic as well from the Franklin Mint. All are uncirculated. I'm considering getting them graded. What do you think the current spot value of these coins might be versus getting them graded?

Thanks,

Dennis

Answer
Hi Dennis,
The value on the Liberian coins is pretty much spot value. These coins would have right around an ounce of pure silver. On occasion they sell for up to 25% above spot, especially when sealed in original packaging. Getting these coins graded would be a waste of money, since the cost of grading will negate any value boost you get out of it.
The Panama coin is a similar story, despite the fact that these were made in low numbers of under 100k each year. This coin has 3.85 ounces of pure silver weight, which is around $60 on the current market. At auction, on eBay for example, they do up to $80. So unless you are sure this coin will grade a perfect MS-70, it would be a waste of money as well.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
