Coin and Paper Money Collecting/US Constitution Coins COA

Question
Hello Mr. Fern,
I have a set of the 2-coin 1987 U.S. Constitution Commemorative .  The COA number is 1273.  But the COA is for the Gold 5-dollar coin only.  All of the other sets I've seen for sale have a COA that includes both the silver one dollar and the gold 5-dollar.  I bouht this directly from the US Mint so I know for sure it came this way.  Is this a rarity of some sort? Did the mint put in the wrong COA?  Will it decrease the value of the set?  Thanks for any insight you can give me.

Answer
Hi Kenneth:

Thanks for picking me to answer your question.

Your set is likely the result of a packaging error, with the wrong COA being mixed up. It is not a significant error, and depending on one's viewpoint, would affect the value minimally. To an interested error collector, it may bring a few dollars more. To a regular collector, a few dollars less.

You may want to contact the mint to see if they have any extra COA's for the two coin set.

The normal 2 coin proof set has traded for between $250 and $290 on EBay from Feb 18 to Feb 22, with three sets sold.

You may want to check future EBay listings under US coins in the Commemorative category to see what these sets are going for.

If you live close to a local shop, they should offer an opinion as to it's value at no charge. Always try and get at least two opinions and try and deal with PNG dealers if possible. Here's a link to find one in your area: http://www.pngdealers.com/dealersearch.php
