Question
QUESTION: I have a Friedrich Grosherzog von Baden 1861 1/2 Gulden coin in excellent condition.  I can't seem to find an exact match on the internet to determine it's value.  Any ideas?  Thank you.

ANSWER: Hi Lori,
Your Baden 1/2 gulden is a pretty scarce coin, with only 264,000 minted that year. They start at $20 or so for a decent well used coin. An excellent example can be anywhere from $75 to $200+ depending on just how excellent it is.
If you want to send a follow-up question with a picture of the coin I can give you a better estimate.
Thanks for the question! =)

QUESTION: Dmitry, I've managed to scan the Friedrich coin.  Not sure if I'm sending just the face or also the back. If back is not attached and you would like to view, let me know.  Thank you, Lori.

Answer
Hi again Lori,
Based on the front side of the coin, there is roughly 20% wear on the higher points. This would make the grade a VF+, which is a middle grade bordering on high grade. The coin does appear to be fully original and undamaged, which is a big plus. It would be worth in the $40 to $60 range in this condition.
Thanks again for the questions! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
